Guide To Your Architect Chair: 5 Smart Options for a Drafting Stool

If you’re deep in the CAD Industry, just studying it now, on your path to becoming an Architect, a Designer, a Civil Engineer, or any other profession where CAD drafting is required – then utmost comfort should definitely be among your top priorities. If you don’t make sure you have a comfortable drafting stool (some call it “my Drafting Chair”, or “my Architect chair”) – then you’ll probably hurt your back (and overall health) in the long run. Think of it, as a CAD user you will spend hours (and I mean many hours!) a day on the computer. So, how can we ensure that the tremendous time we spend sitting and drafting won’t affect our back and health? There are plenty of exercises you can do, and you should. We always recommend drafters to stand or walk around your desk at least 10 minutes every hour during a work day, but a good Architect Chair will also do a lot to ease the pain and bad long-term effects on your back. Let’s delve into the world of Drafting chairs…

Drafting chairs are usually tall stools on which architects (or engineers, or any other CAD user) can sit or stand while drafting their CAD designs. A good Drafting stool will offer you the options to change positions, adjust the height, they can be pulled up to taller tables, providing the draftsman with a perfect comfortable ergonomic work environment. He can enjoy a full range of motion while remaining supported when and where he needs it the most, keeping him working and drafting at maximum comfort levels.

If you’re an architect, an engineer or any other sort of CAD user – most chances are you will be sitting on your butt for very long periods of time. Drafting in a sitting position for 8-12 hours a day straight is not good for your health, period. You should be working and sitting in a healthy way that supports your hard-working back, neck, shoulders, butt and legs. The best way to do that is either to stand a lot while working and have a tall table and a tall adjustable chair, or use an ergonomic chair that offers solid lumbar support. Bottom line is you need to find the best drafting chair solution that fits your needs.

Before you start searching for that holy grail of drafting stools, you should take a few things into account. If a colleague tells you he found the best Architect chair in the market – don’t go buying it so fast. One chair might be perfect for one person, but not as comfortable to another. You should first know what you like in terms of comfort, height, support level, materials the chair is made of (so you know it can last long), etc.

So how to choose the best Drafting stool for you? It’s not easy. There are endless types of drafting chairs and stools out there. You can’t possibly try all of them out. That’s where we come into the picture. We’ll give you our professional opinion, based on our own personal experience (we try lots of Architect chairs!) as well as opinions of our colleagues and friends, all in the same business, all heavy CAD users.
